[ARCHIVED] Bat Exposure

Rabies in Michigan

Rabies is transmitted by introducing the virus into open cuts or wounds such as a bite or by contact with mucous membranes.

The The two types of primary exposure are:
(1)  bat bites, or

(2) mucous membrane contamination with the bat's saliva or brain tissue

A possible exposure would be finding a bat in a room with a sleeping person, a child or a mentally disabled or intoxicated person.  Our Public Health Nurse can assist you in determining the need for additional care.
