From July through September the Lenawee Conservation District will be hosting several “Fields to the Great Lakes” events. Registration is free to farmers, landowners of farmed land and partners of agriculture. The purpose of the events is to provide a platform for farmers to share information about conservation practices and programs that protect our water resources. MAEAP (Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program) Water Quality Tall Ship Sail Workshops involve participants in helping to hoist the mighty sails of the 85’ wooden schooner “Appledore” and sail while learning more about current and emerging issues of water quality. The sails will include a tour of the National Museum of the Great Lakes where the ship will be docked. The Western Lake Erie Basin MAEAP and Conservation Practices Conferences in the Lake Erie Islands provide an in-depth look at the science behind the harmful algae blooms. The Sandpiper boat cruise involves a 3-hour cruise on the Maumee River aboard a 65’ welded steel vessel that was built in 1984 in Maumee, Ohio. Farmers will lead presentations to include conservation practices to protect water resources. For more information about the events contact MAEAP technician, Amy Gilhouse at (517) 263-7400 X 117 or firstname.lastname@example.org
