[ARCHIVED] Bat Exposure

Rabies in Michigan

Rabies is transmitted by introducing the virus into open cuts or wounds such as a bite, or by contact with mucous membranes. The 2 types of primary exposure are (1) bat bites, or (2) mucous membrane contamination with the bat's saliva or brain tissue. A possible exposure would be finding a bat in a room with a sleeping person, a child, or a mentally  disabled or intoxicated person. Our public health nurse can assist you in determining the need for additional care. Call 517-264-5226 option 2
