[ARCHIVED] Lenawee County Launches 9-Month Pilot for New Recycling Drop-Off Sites

Lenawee County is excited to announce the launch of a 9-month trial offering new recycling drop-off locations in three municipalities beginning later this week.

In addition to the existing recycling drop-off site at River and Race Street in Adrian, residents will be able to bring their recycling, starting December 10, to dumpsters at the following locations:

125 E. 2nd St., Onsted
Bachmayer Parking Lot, N. Lane St., Blissfield
100 Block of Mechanic Street in Hudson, next to the trail

These new sites are made possible through a Materials Management Planning (MMP) grant awarded by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy as part of a statewide effort to divert more waste from landfills.

“The pilot created by the County’s Materials Management Committee is designed to increase recycling opportunities for residents who don’t have access to curbside recycling services,” said Lenawee County Solid Waste Coordinator Julie Maurer.

Accepted materials include:

 • Paper and cardboard (please remove packing materials and break down boxes)
 • Plastics #1–7 (clean and dry)
 • Aluminum cans (clean and dry)
 • Glass (clean and dry)

The new dumpsters are for co-mingled recycling, meaning items do not need to be separated. Residents are reminded to use the dumpsters for recyclables only, not for household trash.

“The County and our municipal partners are most concerned about preventing illegal dumping and keeping the recycling streams clean,” Maurer said. “We hope the community will use this opportunity responsibly.”

Lenawee County has contracted with LRS to service the recycling dumpsters twice weekly throughout the pilot period.

“Thank you to Onsted, Hudson, and Blissfield for partnering with us to host the expanded sites,” Maurer added. “This expansion is the result of strong collaboration across our county.”

For questions about accepted materials or information on where to take other items, email solid.waste@lenawee.mi.us or call 517-264-4511.

After the 9-month trial, the MMP Committee and participating municipalities will evaluate the program’s continuation and potential expansion based on usage and the availability of state funding.
